oligosacchorides- helps distinguish cells
glycolipid= glycoprotien - cell recognition
isotonic- same
hypertonic- more
hypotonic- less
hydrophobic dissolves in lipid bilayer
diffusion- high to low
osmosis- water high to low
animal cell = isotonic enviroment
plant cell= hypotonic enviroment
plasmolysis - lose water and shrink- plasma membrane moves away from the wall (bacteria and fungi)
combined forces acting on an ion = electrochemical gradient
endocytosis- takes in macromolecules and particular matter by forming new vesicles from the plasma membrane
cholesterol- maintain fluidity; maintain fluidity
permeable- specific ions and polar molecules Hydrophilic substances avoid contact with lipid bilayer by passing through transport proteins.
